Over the millennia of Western human history, there have always been propaganda machines existing within the governments of civilizations (kingdoms, empires, and nation-states), designed by those governments, ancient and modern, for the express purpose of creating economic, political, and social perceptions, either true or false, within the minds of the governed [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHsXDvZU_9_-IMVz0xm9FHg the real news] masses in order to maintain control of those populations of people. Unfortunately, most of the ancient governments, such as the Persian, Macedonian, and Roman Empires, were tyrannically autocratic, militarily forcing upon the governed masses the will of the subjugating government. Before the advent of the printing press, this propaganda was disseminated, either, by word of mouth or by written and centrally located government declarations and proscriptions inscribed on scrolls and tablets. The illiteracy of the greater mass of the governed made verbal innuendos and rumors extremely effective among ancient and medieval populations of people. After the printing press was developed, however, newspapers and periodicals were routinely published by the presiding rulers for the benefit of the literate portions of the masses, usually those very wealthy components of the population, for the purpose of coordinated mass control. In other words, there was no freedom of access to correct factual information by the masses. Of course, when the majority of the people of new, supposedly democratic, industrial nations became literate, newspapers and magazines were the primary means of disseminating news about what was happening in those nations as a result of the implementation of laws, policies, and regulations created by national governments allowing merely an illusion of freedom to exist as a matter of distorted public information. Thus, by specious cabal, the media's fifth estate was born as an evil fraternal twin to its lesser moral sibling, the publication of fact and truth, with its social, economic, and governmental re-configurations as a socio-political result of the effects of the Reformation and the Renaissance. So, as information systems progressively digressed through the subsequent centuries (from propaganda through the printed word, to radio, to television, and to the Internet) advanced forms of information dissemination resulted in government oligarchies (shadow governments within governments) designing advanced means of manipulating the perceptions of the people they sought to dominate through the utilization of lies and false propaganda.

It was Adolf Hitler's minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, who coined and made famous the 20th Century expression, "tell a lie, publish it widely, make it big, and frequently repeat it, and the people will end-up believing it." Many lies were told to the German people by the Nazi government, or the German National Socialists, from 1933 to the fall of the Third Reich in 1945, and 98 percent of the rank-and-file German people believed that what they read in Nazi newspapers and magazines (the only newspapers and magazines available), what they heard on Nazi radio (the only legal radio stations), and what they saw for news in Nazi theatres was the unblemished truth. Such successfully deceitful propagandizing happened in Germany, Italy, and Japan during the 20th Century, and, over seven decades later, the same type of repressive propagandistic media has been fashioned surreptitiously by conspiring oligarchies (shadow governments within governments) in the USA, a constitutional republic predicated on a Bill of Rights that supposedly ensures the freedom of the press, or the media.Surprisingly, after WWI, and Germany's abysmal defeat, a newly formed constitution for the newly formed Weimar Republic of Germany established, in 1920, freedom of the press as a basic right of the people, in a manner very similar to the U.S.
