BREAST-IMPLANTS-ARE-THEY-FOR-LIFE-e
Introduction
Before considering a breast augmentation with silicone or saline implants, it is important to know all the details about the procedure and the implants. Being prepared for your breast surgery will help ensure a faster recovery and satisfying results from the procedure. There are many questions patients need to ask before undergoing breast implant surgery; one of the most debated issues lately is related to the life span of the implants.
What are implants made of?
The silicone used in breast implants is a biocompatible product that is also used in other types of implants because the material is well tolerated in the body.
The material used to fill silicone implants is a cohesive gel, although as you know, implants filled with saline solution are also common nowadays. Saline implants have a silicone bag or capsule that is filled with saline solution during the breast implant surgery. Silicone breast implants are already filled with silicone gel before the plastic surgeon places them inside.
The new saline solution implants, compared to the old ones we used, have the advantage that they don’t lose volume. This happened when the valve used to fill the implant with saline solution would gradually leak liquid, reducing the dimensions of the breast.
In the case of silicone implants filled with cohesive gel, if the implant suffers a rupture and there is pressure on the implant, the gel will leave the capsule, but when the pressure is eliminated, the gel will reenter the capsule and not leak into the body. This way, many problems and potential complications are prevented.
The new implants look more natural than ever before, and, more importantly, they feel more natural to touch. They ensure that the breast will have a stable shape and a more harmonious look. It is also important to mention that on the inside, around the implant, the body creates a capsule that has the purpose of isolating it from other tissues.
Are breast implants for life?
As we have mentioned before, being aware of the life span of your breast implants and when you need to have them checked is important so that you can budget accordingly and know exactly what you face when undergoing breast augmentation with breast implants.
Generally speaking, implants don’t change over time; they will keep their shape and structure. But the body doesn’t stay the same forever. Breast sagging can occur, and a breast lift might be needed or even a surgical revision to replace the implant with a bigger one.
Most breast implant manufacturers offer a ten-year warranty, but it can be extended for additional fees. There are patients who have had implants for twenty years now without having any trouble with them, aside from capsule contracture that is absolutely normal.
Before anything else, it is important for the patient to pay attention to their breast implants and call the doctor as soon as they discover something that is not right. After the surgery, your plastic surgeon will give you a set of indications and recommendations for the post-operative period, and he will also tell you when to schedule an appointment to have your breast implants checked. When you follow the doctor’s orders, you will be doing the best you can to maintain the look and structure of the implants for as long as possible.
Another aspect worth discussing is not entirely related to the integrity of the implants, but it is something that can change the results of your breast surgery. As we have already mentioned, time is not usually our friend: skin loses elasticity and breast sagging can occur. While this is natural and normal, it can affect the results of your surgery, as can gaining a lot of weight or losing weight after a drastic diet regimen.
Breastfeeding and mammography after breast implant surgery
After undergoing a breast augmentation with implants, you can have a mammogram without any problems; the doctor simply lifts the mammary glands together with the pectoral muscle and the glands will be visible without any reason for concern.
But breastfeeding is another issue altogether. When the surgery does not affect the mammary glands, breastfeeding is usually possible and doesn’t present any problems. However, breastfeeding problems can occur when the plastic surgeon lifts the breasts during the breast augmentation, as the milk ducts might be damaged. This is why it is usually recommended to schedule breast augmentation surgery once you are finished breastfeeding and are not considering pregnancy in the future.
If you already have breast implants and you want to breastfeed, it is essential to know that during and after breastfeeding, for a period of time, the breasts will increase in size over the implants. The skin will stretch, leading to potential sagging of the breasts.
If you are pregnant and you already have breast implants, there is no need to worry, especially if you are not planning on breastfeeding. However, if you are seeking implant surgery, you should avoid pregnancy at least for a few months after the surgery is performed, and we cannot perform breast augmentation surgery on a pregnant woman.
Conclusion
Breast implants might not last a lifetime for every patient, but this doesn’t change the fact that you can preserve the integrity of your breast implants by maintaining a constant weight, looking after your skin, and following the plastic surgeon’s indications.
