The London Taxi

Taxicabs in the United Kingdom are also known as hackney carriages, and are licensed by the local authorities within most of Great Britain. The black cabs are popular within London, as well as other large cities within Great Britain, although they are generally associated with the capital in the same way red open top double Decker buses are. To celebrate the queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee (50th anniversary of the queens reign) in two thousand and two fifty golden taxis were produced.

The black cabs of the United Kingdom are known for their distinctive "TAXI" light to the top of the vehicle which illuminates when the taxi is available for hire. In the past the taxi cab throughout the United Kingdom would likely have been a large saloon car which allowed for ample room for passengers and were affordable, but the growing attention and regulation surrounding disability access lead to many local authorities offering free licenses to taxi cabs which were sufficiently equipped to allow for disabled passengers in wheel chairs. Now many vehicles are specifically designed with wheel chair access in mind, with large vehicles equipped with extendable ramps and ample room in the back.

There is an estimated twenty one thousand black taxi cabs on London streets currently, and each one is required to be licensed by the Public Carriage Office which is responsible for licensing taxis within the Greater London area. To become a London taxi driver the applicant must also pass The Knowledge test, which is designed to test a driver's knowledge of the streets of London.
