UPS announced in February that they could begin making parcel shipping deliveries with drones in the not so distant future. If it goes as expected, parcel shipping, or at a minimum parcel deliveries, may be performed by an unmanned drone. Is UPS actually that close to automating parcel shipping? In this new age of parcel shipping technology, automated package shipping definitely isn't science fiction, actually, it's essentially here now.

Not long ago, UPS took their step into the future launching an unmanned drone from one of their vans about a quarter-mile from a farm in Florida. After successfully delivering a package, the drone flew back to the UPS truck which was 2000 feet further away.

UPS used this parcel delivery by drone to determine how effectively package shipping costs and package delivery expenses can be minimized for difficult delivery areas. UPS can save on work and fuel prices by employing a drone rather than traditional UPS delivery trucks. Package providers, package shippers, and the ecommerce shipping industry could gain from automated package shipping.

The drone launch means a very bright future for United Parcel Service Inc., although UPS drones won't replace the uniformed service providers and the primary use of drones is to assist with package shipping when necessary. The actual ability of drones to reduce UPS driver's mileage has not been thoroughly tested yet.

By experimenting with drone deliveries UPS is displaying they're focused on transforming parcel shipping service in the near future. Apart from the major changes that have to be made with logistic management, there are regulatory hurdles to jump before these methods of package shipping could be normal. Present polices in the U . S . won't allow drone flights over civilians or areas out of sight for the drone operator. With the current 200 feet altitude of UPS parcel shipping drones, deliveries aren't possible for now. The projected guidelines by the Federal Aviation Administration were supposed to be released at the conclusion of last year, but certain security issues extending the delays. It won't be until later this year, at the earliest, that UPS will be performing small parcel shipping with drones routinely.

Workhorse Group Inc. that produces the electric parcel delivery trucks for UPS is enlisted to build a rolling warehouse system in which a drone could be launched from a UPS vehicle and soar at an altitude of around 200 feet and drop off the package at the destination. The drone will then go back to the truck after it delivers the package.

The drone can hold small packages around 10-pounds and the driver can use a street view map to determine the precise location of the area where the package will be delivered. The drone will have to drop packages a ways from the door, because package shipping drones won't be allowed to Proper Package Auditing deliver underneath structures.

UPS is presently running several tests for drone-delivered packages.
