All you need to know about mastitis

Definition

Mastitis is a breast tissue’s infection that causes pain, swelling, warmth and redness for your breasts. It also makes you febricity and coldness. Mastitis most normally influences women who are breastfeeding, though sometimes it can appear in mothers who do not feed her baby by her milk.

In almost situations, lactational mastitis happens within the first three months after giving birth, but this condition can also appear during feeding your baby by your milk. It makes you tired, exhausted, and difficult to look after your baby.

Sometimes the mastitis causes a mother to wean her baby before she has an intention; however, it is better for you and your baby when continuing to breastfeed, even while taking an antibiotic to treat mastitis.

Symptoms

- Breast Warmth

- Discomfort or feeling sick

- Swollen Breast

- Painful feel or a sensation of burning continuously or during breastfeeding

- Redness on skin

- Fever above 38.3C or higher

Although the mastitis usually happens in the first few weeks of breastfeeding, it can appear at any time during breastfeeding. Lactational mastitis has a tendency to influence only one breast - not both breasts. In most cases, you will get ill with flu-like symptoms for a lot of hours before realizing that there is a red area of pain on your breasts. - Abscess: When the mastitis is not adequately treated, or if it involves in the stagnant milk, abscesses can develop in the breast. The abscess usually requires a surgery. To avoid this complication, talk to your doctor right away when developing signs or symptoms of the mastitis.

How to cure the mastitis

- Antibiotic: To treat the mastitis, you have to usually take a 10 to 14 days antibiotic.

- Self care: Resting, continuing to breastfeed and drinking extra fluids can help your body get through a breast infection. Often emptying the affected breast. If your baby refuses to breastfeed on the affected breast, you can use a pumping or hand to milk.

- Adjust breastfeeding techniques: Make sure your breasts are completely empty during breastfeeding, which is the key to avoiding the mastitis. Your doctor may consider your breastfeeding techniques or may refer you to a breastfeeding consultant for ongoing support.

- Drink lots of water

- If you have problems in a part of your breast, you should use warm compresses to your breast or have a warm shower before breastfeeding or milking. Wear an adaptable bra.

- If breastfeeding with the infected breast is too painful or your baby refuses to nurse on that breast, let's try pumping or milking by your hands.

Prevention

See a breastfeeding consultant to get breastfeeding techniques and to avoid complications like mastitis.

Minimize your risk of the mastitis by completely draining off milk from your breast while breastfeeding. Allows your baby to nurse one breast until that breast is completely empty before switching to the other breast during feeding. If your baby only nurses a few minutes on the second breast or nothing, begin breastfeeding on the second breast at the next feeding time.

Change your breasts and your position of the breast when breastfeeding in next time. Lastly, do not let your baby use your nipple unless he/she does not nurse.
