Seven patients were operated within 2 days of sustaining their fracture (open, neurovascular compromise or threatened skin). Nine (42.9%) patients had postoperative complications including infection (1 case), peri-prosthetic fracture (one case), metal implant prominence/pressure symptoms and pain (seven cases). All of them required a second operation for removal of metal implant. The majority, six (67%) of the implants removed, were reconstruction plates. At final follow-up, all these patients had complete BAY 73-4506 resolution of their symptoms. Fig. 2 shows radiographs pre- and post-removal of metal implant. Eighty-one conservatively managed undisplaced medial, middle and lateral end fractures had excellent mean UCLA shoulder scores and all of these fractures united (Table 2?and?Table 3). Displaced Allman groups 1 and 2 fractures treated conservatively accounted for 56 patients. Their non-union rates were 15.7% and 40%, respectively. (Table 2) Majority of 21 fractures operated upon were either displaced Allman group 1 or 2, their non-union rates were zero and 7.7%, respectively. Over 50% of the indications for surgery were for symptomatic non-union. Arginase On assessing the UCLA scores between the operative and non-operative groups of patients in mid-shaft fractures, a statistically significant difference was noted (p?LY2157299 mouse This study had a rate of 11.7%; this rise can be attributed not only to the better understanding of the fractures at risk of non-union but also to the patients demands and expectations. Over 50% who required operative intervention had symptomatic non-union, all of these united and were symptom-free postoperatively. Similar results have been reported by another author.11 Our rate of metal implant removal was 42.9%; other studies have quoted rates between 50% and 100%.7, 1?and?6 At final follow-up, all patients had their symptoms resolved. Our postoperative infection rate was 4.
