Department stores initially originated in the middle of 19th century, which delivered a new innovative means to shopping. Before the introduction of the department store every single thing was put up for sale in dedicated shops. If you desired to buy children’s games or women’s apparel you often had to travel to entirely different areas of town to complete your shopping list. First department stores started opening in Britain and France. As the affluent middle class was widening during the course of the Industrial Revolution more places started opening up for these people to go shopping at. A department store was the ideal place to exhibit collectively all the high end items that the middle class would be interested in buying. It was particularly favorable for women of all ages as they could go shopping at department stores unaccompanied without tarnishing their names. Department stores were an exciting novelty for the people at the time, with many writers selecting to set their novels entirely in department shops.

Since its creation, many more shops under the same brand name started opening up all over the nation. This British department shop, currently under the possession of Galen Weston, has an extremely exciting history. It first opened at the start of the past century by an entrepreneur from The usa, who gave it his own last name. He decided to build his store at the deserted and unpopular end of a known shopping street in London, but shortly, by way of his store’s triumph, many more businesses began opening their shops there as well. The history of this store is so popular that a TV show was developed recounting the facts of its life and functioning. It is also famous for being one of the first shops to offer ready-to-wear clothes for young women. Nowadays it has several branches across the UK.
