As a child I loved to read nursery rhymes. I thought the stories had been simple, fun, and simple to learn. They had been one of the first books I learned to read. Now as a preschool teacher I comprehend the value of teaching young children these rhymes. It introduces them to rhyming, simple parts of a story such as cause and impact, characters, setting, and plot. They are also extremely catchy.

Preschool nursery rhymes introduce children to rhyming which is one of the building blocks to reading. If a child learns to rhyme at a young age, they will be able to recognize word households when they begin to learn phonics. They will comprehend that word chunks that have the same sound often have similar spelling. This will help them decode words rapidly and develop fluency.

Mother Goose rhymes use familiar parts of a story such as character, setting, and plot. Introducing young kids to components of a story will assist them develop comprehension skills. This will help them organize their thoughts, so they will remember the story much better. They will learn they can find parts of a story even in more complicated literature.

These brief poems also use more complex components of a story such as trigger and impact and issue and solution. Kids can find many instances of trigger and impact in these short stories. For example in the Nursery Rhyme Jack and Jill. Jack fell down is the trigger. And broke his crown is the effect. An additional example is in the Nursery Rhyme Little Bo Peep. The trigger is her sheep are lost and the impact is she has to find them.

In these brief stories characters are also given a issue they must resolve. Many of the answer are tragic such as Humpty Dumpty and Jack and Jill however, kids will discover a good story as a issue and solution.

Nursery Rhymes are engaging. Anybody who has ever sat with a child knows that they have a hard time focusing on one activity for a lengthy time. These short stories are the correct length for a child's attention span. Nursery Rhymes are also fun and simple to remember. They are simple stories with rhyme and rhythm. That make them hard to forget. They are full of suspense. Your child will wonder what happens next following Humpty Dumpty falls off the wall and Jack and Jill fall down the hill, or Old Mother Hubbard goes to a cupboard that is bare.
