Access Bank Plc has announced a profit after tax of N56.4 billion for nine months ended Sept. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. This is contained in the bank’s nine months financial results released by the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in Lagos on Thursday. The results also indicated 33 per cent growth in gross earnings year-on-year to N365 billion from N275 billion in 2016, driven primarily by the strong performance on core revenue lines. Commenting on the bank’s performance, Mr Herbert Wigwe, the bank’s Group Managing Director said that strategies embarked upon between 2013 and 2017 contributed to the growth. We continue to gain momentum in our efforts to achieve more diversified earnings as we strengthen our retail and digital offerings. I am excited at the prospects in the coming months," Wigwe said.


Considering the obstacles- cultural, social, religious and institutional- stacked against the Nigerian girl child, a non governmental organization, Child Love and Protection Advocacy Initiative(CLAPAI), has celebrated the girl child during the World girl child celebration recently. To mark the occasion, which is held every October 11, CLAPAI organized a programme dubbed ‘Project Pad a Girl for Free’. The founder of the orphanage home, which is located in Zarazong Village in Jos East Local Government Council Area, said the event, which was a huge success according to her, would have been impossible but for MMM’s financial intervention. She used the occasion to call on public-spirited Nigerians and corporate bodies to extend their hands of fellowship to the orphanage. Elated by the event and the free sanitary pads given to her, Jessica Gomut, thanked the orphanage and its funding partner, MMM, for the timely intervention, saying " I won’t be buying pads anytime soon. That means I am going to save some money which will be used for something else.

Traders in Timber Market, Enugu, have commended the state Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, for embarking on the five kilometer Timber Market road project, to ease movement in the area. The Chairman of the traders’ association, Chief Levi Obi, gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Friday. Obi said that due to the bad state of the road the traders and motorists plying the area had experienced a setback in their businesses. For some years now, customers find it difficult to drive into the market to patronize the traders," he said. He said that Gov. Ugwuanyi had kept his campaign promises he made to traders in the state which included the construction of the road.

He also said the yam exported to the UK was not cleared by the agency as the cargo was not available for inspection by the NAQS at the point of take off. Speaking while briefing Newsmen in Abuja yesterday, Dr Isegbe said the yam was not rejected and yam export to US had no issue, except that of the UK which was not cleared by officers of the NAQs. He assured that no matter the logistic challenge experienced by the exporter of yam to the UK,Nigeria is very determined and committed to yam export. Further lamenting the aging population of farmers Dr Isegbe said as a solution Nigeria has developed yam heap making machine to increase production. And encourage the youth to explore yam cultivation and production.


They said, although some cases of tuber spoilage were reported in both cases, these were separated from the good ones, and the good ones were distributed to the buyers. It further directed its Committees on Population and Governmental Affairs to ensure implementation and report back in six weeks for further legislative action. Mr Ibrahim Magu, the Acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), has called on Nigerians especially the media to join hands with the commission in the fight against corruption. Magu made the call while fielding questions from newsmen on Thursday in Abuja on the sideline of a preparatory meeting towards 2018 African Union (AU) conference. We appeal to the media to expose the corrupt. We want everybody to work with us, particularly the media, to fight corruption, that is the way to forge ahead. To move forward in the fight against corruption, we need to work together," he said. Magu assured that President Muhammadu Buhari-led admisnistation would not disappoint the rest of the world in its fight against corruption as he had demonstrated the political will to the cause.


The fact that this meeting is taking place is an indication that there is an effective political will to fight corruption and recognition of President Buhari’s commitment. The President had been identified as a leader and champion of anti-corruption in Africa, this attests to the fight that Nigeria is fighting against corruption. It emboldens our fight against corruption; it is encouraging, for the fact that the whole world recognised the President as an anti-corruption champion. You and I know that he is not kidding and there is no pretence in his will to fight against corruption, there is no doubt about that," he said.


Magu said that the commission would not also disappoint the rest of the world as they had recognised the President in the fight. They have come here, the African Union as our brothers and sisters. We will do everything possible to contribute positively in the fight as we keep telling you that corruption is the arch enemy of development in the world. So now, the African is saying that corruption is the worst enemy of the continent and we also appealing to you to expose the corrupt. It is not the media trial kind of thing that is the only way we can win the battle, you have to work with us to make us move forward," he said. Mr. Thomas Quartey, the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, also tasked the media to play a critical role in the fight against corruption the country.
