You are finally ready to try organic gardening. If you create healthy plants, they are going to be stronger and therefore, less likely to succumb to diseases and insects. Start your garden off with a high-quality soil that you can enrich over time.

Your tool handles can easily be used as handy rulers. Large handled tools like rakes, hoes or shovels may be used like measuring sticks. Simply lay the handles out on the floor and run a measuring tape next to them. Use a permanent marker to label distances. Now, the next time you do work in the garden, you'll actually have a ruler at your fingertips.

Use perennials resistant to slugs and snails. A plant can be completely demolished overnight by slugs and snails. These garden vermin prefer plants with tender, herbaceous stems and leaves, particularly seedlings and young plants. Some perennials are not preferred meals for snails and slugs, especially if their foliage is hairy and tough, or tastes bad. Excellent varieties include heuchera, achillea, euphorbia, campanula, and helleborus.

Always make sure to mow your lawn to the appropriate length, always making sure that the cut is not too close. If you let your grass keep some height after mowing, it will be able to absorb more sun and moisture resulting in a lusher, greener lawn. Short grass on the other hand is more susceptible to drying out.

If you are planning on growing peas, start them indoors before putting them outdoors in your garden. Pea seeds germinate better indoors. You will also have hardy seedlings that will be able to resist disease and pests much better. Once they grow a bit bigger, the seedlings can be easily transplanted to an outdoor garden.

For showy flowers throughout the spring and summer, plant plenty of bulbs. Planting and growing bulbs is very simple, and once planted the bulbs will grow for years. If you choose your plants carefully, you could have flowers in blossom from the first weeks of spring to the end of the summer.

Select a specific type of plant to be the focal point of your garden. In a well designed garden you should have a focal point so that your eyes will stay there. It can be anything, but oftentimes a plant that stands out from its neighbors will do the trick.

When growing a vegetable garden it can be hard to control pests. While chemicals can help with pest control, you should avoid using overly harsh ones, as veggies you grow in your garden are meant for eating. Instead of resorting to these harmful chemicals, you can keep garden pests at bay simply by paying close attention. In many cases, you can simply remove the pests from your plants by picking them off.

For visual interest, make one plant a focal point of your garden. Although it requires lots of hard work and patience, it's ultimately worth it to own an organic garden that's successful.check this out
