Tomini3,4 and Wim Groot2,AbstractBackground: Networks of family and close friends are a supply of assistance and are usually associated with greater life satisfaction values amongst older adults. On the other hand, older adults who're satisfied with their life could be extra capable to develop and preserve a wider social network. Because of this, the causal link among size and composition on the social networks and satisfaction with life is however to be explored. This paper investigates the effect from the `size', (number of family members and good friends, and network) plus the `composition' (the proportion of friends more than total variety of persons) with the social network on life satisfaction among older adults (50+). Moreover, we also investigate the patterns of this relation in between different European nations. Process: Information from the 4th wave of Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe and an instrumental variable approach are utilised to estimate the extent of the relation between life satisfaction and size and composition of social networks. Outcomes: Respondents in Western and Northern European (WNE) countries report larger networks than respondents in Eastern and Southern European (ESE) countries. On the other hand, the constructive relationship among network size title= 2042098614560730 and life satisfaction is constant across countries. However, the share of buddies inside the network appears to become generally negatively related to satisfaction with life, though outcomes are not statistically considerable for all countries. Conclusions: Apparently, a larger individual network is very important for older adults (50+) to become more satisfied with life.
