Some say that there's no difference between traditional tattoos and neo-traditional tattoos; though the differences are slight, they are still there. Traditional tattoos consist of dark heavy line strokes and solid colors.nih.gov They are intentionally kept simple in design and use a limited color palette that consists of red, green, yellow, brown, and blue with little to no shading. Tattoo culture at the time was very much fringe and on the outskirts of society, unlike the mainstream appeal and fine art credibility it has today. These sailors would get iconic images stamped on their body as a celebration of their service; only accomplished sailors that have been to far away lands and traveled a certain number of miles were able to get swallows, for example.

Traditional tattoos were not customly created, rather they were just flash picked off walls. American flag, daggers, pin ups, swallows and nautical stars. All of these symbols stemmed from classic sailor and Navy icons that were prevalent in the early 20th century when servicemen would return stateside and get tattooed. Neo-traditional tattoos pay homage to the classic, timeless art form through the same techniques; bold lines and heavy color saturation with minimal shading and detail. However, the imagery and designs used are generally more diverse and the color palette used is more diverse. A purely "American" tattoo style, neo traditional has included candles, lighthouses, diamonds, coffins and other concepts and rendered them in a "traditional" fashion. Not to be confused with "New-School", a more cartoonish, exaggerated and colorful style of tattooing, Neo-traditional is a revival of the "Old-School", a celebration of roots and origins. The innate beauty that the traditional tattoo style offers appeals across all generations of enthusiasts; bold lines and solid colors tend to fade less, offering the longevity and long lasting quality that so many desire. Aside from black and grey, traditional has proven to be the one of the only tattoo styles that stand the test of time, and will always have an audience to wear them. The beauty of traditional tattooing is just that; there will always be artists looking to recreate the classic tattoos and culture that helped pave the way and make the tattoo industry what it is today.

If you are considering the question, "To tattoo or not to?" I think more serious questions to ask yourself are: What are my motives for wanting a tattoo? Am I seeking to glorify God or draw attention to myself? Will my tattoo be a source of contention for my loved ones? Will getting a tattoo cause me to disobey my parents? Will my tattoo cause someone who is weak in the faith to stumble? In my article, "What to Do When the Bible is Not Clear," we discover that God has given us a means to judge our motives and weigh our decisions. Now that's pretty clear. Since tattooing is such a controversial issue today, I think it's important to examine your heart and your motives before you make the decision. Self Exam - To Tattoo or Not To?

How does my heart and my conscience convict me? Do I have freedom in Christ and a clear conscience before the Lord regarding the decision to get a tattoo? Am I passing judgment on a brother or sister because I don't have freedom in Christ to receive a tattoo? Will I still want this tattoo years from now? Will my parents and family approve, and/or will my future spouse want me to have this tattoo? Will I cause a weaker brother to stumble if I receive a tattoo? Is my decision based on faith and will the result be glorifying to God? Ultimately, the decision is between you and God.

Though it may not be a black and white issue, there is a right choice for each individual. Take some time to honestly answer these questions and the Lord will show you what to do. Tattoo has come a long way when it comes to how people perceived those who are getting inked. In other cultures, tattoo is an accepted way of life because getting a tattoo meant a rite of passage from one stage of maturity to a higher level. In western culture however, the idea still persists that having a tattoo either meant that you came from prison or that you are part of a dangerous group. While there may have been basis in the past for that assumption to linger, it is erroneous to continually have that kind of perception. Today, there are a lot of known individuals who are productive members of society who sports a tattoo.

Known humanitarian and charitable advocate Angelina Jolie has been in the forefront in the worldwide campaign for awareness in what is happening in Africa. She is a mother of six children, the highest paid actress in Hollywood, considered the most powerful woman of the world and also a known tattoo enthusiasts. Asking them if it is real will seem like an insult in the same way as asking them if it hurt while getting tattooed. Of course, getting a tattoo hurt.

The tattooed person may not want to embarrass you in the same way that you are embarrassing them by asking them questions they do not want to answer. Wait that they will be the one to volunteer the information. Having a tattoo is just the same with any other person. Observe proper etiquette when dealing with everyone else.

That type of burning away a tattoo is not the focus of this article. The focus of this article is on those people who actually apply a flame to their tattoo with the intention of burning it off of their body. There are several ways in which people have tried to do this. Some have used matches, some have used lighters, and some have used high intensity propane or butane torches to burn the tattoo away. There are several reason why burning your tattoo away is not a good option for having a tattoo removed. The first is that you would have to burn fairly deeply to get the at the tattoo ink holding skin cells. The tattoo ink is stored beneath the epidermis in a layer of skin called the dermis. This procedure would be extremely painful if it was even endurable at all. The next reason that burning a tattoo away is a bad idea is that bad burns on the human body are a major cause of infections. The last reason that this is a bad idea is because you would be left with horrible scarring which would likely be more unflattering than the tattoo was.
