The P600 is interpreted as reflecting the integration of representations stored differently in the posterior part of the brain (Patel, 2003). In this experiment, the linguistic incongruities are created on the basis of phrase structure principles and musical incongruities are generated based on principles of harmony and key-relatedness. Patel��s hypothesis is extended as the Syntactic Equivalence Hypothesis in Koelsch (2012a) claiming that music-syntactic processing includes hierarchical processing that is shared with other cognitive systems such as language (and action).
