A Special Plant From The Old World

Date trees typically reach about 21-23 metres (69-75 ft) in height, 7 growing singly or forming a clump with several stems from a single root system. The leaves are 4-6 metres (13-20 ft) long, with spines on the petiole , and Mazafati Dates exporters pinnate , with about 150 leaflets. The leaflets are 30 cm (12 in) long and 2 cm (0.79 in) wide. The full span of the crown ranges from 6-10 m (20-33 ft). Contamination with insects and microorganisms: Physical examination of dates by using binocular showed that irradiation was more effective on controlling all stages of insects, as in table 12, either during or end of storage. Whereas, freezing keep all dates, but it is more expensive than room temperature. Most of dates in un-irradiated samples contain phases and stages of Ephestia spp insects, as pupa and eggs.

If you've never tried date fruit before, it's perhaps not surprising. Whilst they are a popular staple food of the Middle East, where they have been around for thousands of years, they are not as commonly found elsewhere in the world. In essence, dates are the fruit of the date palm. They are a small (2cm to 7cm), oval fruit with a seed in the middle. The word date actually comes from the Greek work 'daktylos', meaning 'finger' due to their shape. There are many different varieties of dates, each with its own unique texture and taste, and varying in colour.

Some common and/or local varieties: Anjou (snacking, cooking) Pale green or red. Mellow flavor. Bartletts (snacking) Green skins that ripens to yellow. Smooth, sweet, juicy. Bosc (cooking, baking) Yellow-brown skin. Crisp, creamy, aromatic. Comice (snacking) Yellow skin with red blush. Buttery, smooth, sweet. Seckles (cooking, canning) Brownish skin with red blush. Firm, sweet, spicy.

According to a 2011 study ‘The effect of late pregnancy consumption of date fruit on Kimia Dates labour and delivery' by Al Kuran and others it was found that consumptions of date fruit in the last four weeks before labour significantly reduced the need for induction and augmentation of labour, and produced a more favourable, but non-significant, delivery outcome.

Climate - hot, dry climate, pollination and seed set disfavored by temperatures below the mid 70s F, tolerate higher temperatures than most other fruit crops; mid-summer temperatures of 100-110 °F are typical in date production, can tolerate light freezing (to 20-23 F) in winter, a cool winter helps to synchronize flowering and ripening of fruit, extremely resistant to wind damage.
